Jayne and Marilyn photographed at the premiere of The Rose Tattoo in 1955. The photos taken from that night are often used as “proof” that these two wonderful ladies hated each other. At this time Jayne was on Broadway starring in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and Marilyn was one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Marilyn and Jayne never said anything bad about each other, but Jayne was quite outspoken about her annoyance at the constant Marilyn comparisons. In her December 8, 1956 issue of Picturegoer magazine, Jayne actually praised Marilyn saying; “I’ve always thought she deserved every bit of the success she had attained. She’s a far better actress than she is generally given credit for.” A lot of the hate that Jayne receives is from Marilyn Monroe fans. I’ve always felt that there was some unspoken rule that you can’t be fans of both women, which is ridiculous. They were both talented, beautiful, women that worked hard to attain success and achieve dreams. Both are wonderful role models for women everywhere.
